These championships will be remembered for Russia’s dominance. They grabbed 4 medals overall including the Gold and Silver in the Men’s Individual event which was won by little known 21 year old Serguei Karyakin with his team mate Aleksander Lesun coming a close second. Russia’s Women capped off a fine championships by winning the Women’s relay by a massive 40 seconds and created history by amazingly winning the fencing discipline with 45 victories and only 9 defeats.
Amelie Caze capped of a remarkable season by winning her 3rd World Championship which now has her equal with the great Hungarian Champion Zsuzsa Vörös and just one behind the all time record. Caze said "For the moment I'm happy with the three that I have, but another title would be nice. I've had a hard year, I have three new coaches and I have high hopes for next year." Caze was also the most successful individual athlete at the Championships by also adding the Team Gold and Relay Silver to her growing collection.
Poland broke their World Championships Gold medal drought by winning the first ever Mixed Relay event in style and Belarus beat all the odds by storming to a famous victory in the Men’s relay.
