The World #1 charged past the double Olympic champion and defending World Champion Andrei Moiseev (RUS) in the last 500 meters to become the 52nd Modern Pentathlon World Champion. Jinwha Jung (KOR) won his 2nd medal of the championships, this time bronze.
"Thank you to everyone that helped me to get here. I am so happy, this is unbelievable" stated an overwhelmed Lesun.
Lesun started the day in his usual class, finishing top in the fencing. A solid time in the swim, followed by a better than expected score in his weakest discipline riding meant that the Russian started 3rd in the combined event.
Quick shooting and more endurance than his more celebrated team mate Moiseev meant he won gold after winning silver at the past 2 World Championships.
"When I left the last shoot, I did not think I had it in me to beat Andrei (Moiseev). We battled so hard in the last lap, I was so relieved that I had enough in my legs to finally win gold after 2 consecutive silvers" said the new World Champion.
Moiseev had the gold medal in his hands until the final run said: "I just didn't had enough in the last run. I am very happy for Alekansder (Lesun) to win this gold".
Jung, who was in the Korean men's relay team who made history on Tuesday as they won the 1st ever World Championships gold for Korea was in disbelief after his bronze: "This is unbelievable for me and my country. The gold medal in the relay gave me so much confidence and it gave me the belief that I was good enough and now I have a World Championships individual medal to show it."
Apart from the medalists, Stefan Kollner (GER), Nicola Benedetti (ITA) and Riccardo de Luca (ITA) will be going back to their home countries happy as they secured Olympic qualification, due to they were the 1st 3 athletes across the finishing line who had not yet qualified for the Olympic Games.
Riccardo De Luca (ITA) smashed his team mates Nicola Benedetti's world record by 10 seconds in the combined event in a remarkable time of 9:41. "I am enormously happy with my result, it's been my best pentathlon race ever" stated the super quick Italian.
This time time helped Italy win the teams medal for the 1st time since 1986. "Today we made history. And we're now ready to face the Russian team at the Olympics" concluded De Luca.
The Russian team had to settle for silver as they left Moiseev and Korea claimed a well deserved bronze.
The men's final was the finale of the 2012 Modern Pentathlon World Championships. The world best all round athletes now head to Chengdu, China for the World Cup Final later this month.
