Sarolta Kovacs (HUN) finished 2nd overall after starting the combined 9 seconds behind Schoneborn, the locals had something to smile about with Donata Rimsaite (RUS) placing 3rd. World Number 1 Laura Asadauskaite (LTU) was the fastest in the combined (11:35.41) but left herself to much to falling just 6 seconds away from a podium place finish.
Schoneborn: " Obviously, I am very happy with the result. The competition was organized very well. Very high level of athletes, all are very competitive and strong. I knew I was leading from the beginning. I was only few second before Kovacs, who was right behind. Only on the third lap I managed to go ahead and enlarge the distance."
Rimsaite who claimed bronze stated: I am happy that this competition was very stable for me, although i can't say it was my best performance. I ended up on the podium and of course I am very satisfied. Running course was not easy at all, big part was sandy and after yesterday navy rain it felt like i ran much more than 3 km. I did my best and ran as fast as I could on the final lap".
Schoneborn, the Olympic champion returned to her vintage form in Moscow after a dissapointing end to the UIPM season which saw her lose her #1 World ranking. Schoneborn won the fencing with a massive 1040 points, this matched with her solid swim and a perfect ride she started first in the combined event. With the German's running being so strong, and she was able to stay cool under the shooting pressure, she easily beat Kovacs for the gold and the big winner cheque.
Non-European Margaux Isaksen (USA) can take away some positives from today's event as she looks to regain form, a 5th place is something she will look at as a step in the right direction. This will be satifying to the 21 year old as she is still getting over her sickness that ruined her 2012 season.
Last year's champion Victoria Tereshuk (UKR) started the day poorly but put in a strong combined event (11:52.01) which left her in 6th overall.
Once again we apologise for the absence of a webcast this is something we are looking to resolve.
