Up Close & Personal: Caze Speaks about Injury & 2012

Triple World Champion and one of the all-time greats, Amelie Caze (FRA) was a notable absentee from the second half of the 2011 due to an injury sustained at World Cup #3.

She returned, still injured to compete at the European Championships, and was able to finish 4th, which ensured her goal of Olympic qualification. After this remarkable achievement, Caze missed the World Cup Final, World Championships and Champion of Champions as she aimed to get herself right for her assault at a maiden Olympic title in 2012.

UIPM media caught up with the 26 year old for an in depth season to learn more about her injury and her plans for 2012:

What exactly was the injury, and how did it happen?
I got a chronic inflammation in my leg. It first occurred in a fencing injuries two years ago.

What have you done to ensure the injury revered?
When the injury first happened, I had a lot of physiotherapy and one full month of rest. In September I had specific treatment with a sports doctor for 3 months.

What did you do to keep fit while you have the injury?
The magic thing with pentathlon, is the fact that you still can training in one or two events even when you had an injury! So I swam a lot, and did shooting practice.

How is the injury now? Is it back to 100%
Yes, now I have started to run and fence. But I am still taking it slowly to take care.

When did you start training full time again?
January.

What will you be doing differently to prevent the injury coming back?
I am trying to have more rest time and do make stretching. I am also having more physiotherapy work done and I now have long and specific warm ups.

Are you worried that your injury will affect your Olympic preparation at all?
Not at all. I have time on my side as I have already secured my qualification place at the European Championships. My only goal in 2012 is the Olympic Games, so I am doing everything in my power to be in great form on the 12 August 2012 in Greenwich Park.  Sure, it's not very easy for me to be patient but all my coaches help me. It’s a great pleasure for me to feel like a Pentathlete again!

What events will you be competing in 2012?
3 Worlds Cup’s, World Cup Final, Worlds championships, European Championships and the Olympic Games.
