Today we speak to Ilya Shugarov (RUS) who shot to international pentathlon stardom by winning World Cup #4 this year at his first major senior competition:
What would it mean to you to win your first junior title?
As to every athlete the victory at the World Championships would be a great honour for me and for my country.
What confidence did winning World Cup #4 give you for this event?
I would not say that it gave me any confidence, it was a new experience competing among the Senior athletes, fortunately, successful one, but I did not realize it to the end and it do not think about the confidence now.
Who do you see as your biggest threat for gold in Poland?
The World Championships is only once a year and it would be frustrating to demonstrate a bad result.
What discipline will be key for you to win?
This is Modern Pentathlon where everything counts
Did competing at the Youth Olympic Games help you mentally for these big events?
It seems such a long time ago, so many events took place since that time but the Youth Olympic Games will forever remain in my memory as one of the biggest events
Did competing in some senior event help you for these junior events and how?
Yes and no. Because I repeat these are absolutely different things and two different requirements to the athlete, I am still a Junior athlete and my main start is the Junior World Championships
What have you been focusing on the most in training leading into the Junior World Championships?
Riding and combined.
