In this phase of pentathlon preseason training, individual tournaments like this are very beneficial to improve the specific sport.
The best result came from Pavlo Kirpulyanskyy (UKR) who reached the last 16 and eventually lost to the Monegasque fencer Simone De Rosa 15 -13 to just miss out on the last 8.
Ruslan Nackonechnyi (UKR) finished became 36th and Dmytro Kirpulyanskyy (UKR) 45th. 2012 World Cup #3 champion Nicola Benedetti (ITA) struggled a bit as he admitted that he only just started to train again and finished back in 80th position.
A total of 140 athletes participated in this yearly event and Gustin Ronan (FRA) who won the 2011 teams gold at the Fencing World Championships won the tournament, which shows the quality on show in the Principality.
Of course being in Monaco, the pentathletes used the opportunity to visit the UIPM Headquarters and sign on the wall of fame, visited the world famous Monte-Carlo casino, enjoyed the nice cars and since the weather was so warm they even went for a swim in the Mediterranean sea.
“To visit Monaco and participate in this tournament was probably the best part of our training preparation for the coming season” stated D Kirpulyanskyy before leaving sunny Monaco and heading back to Tata where the Ukrainian team is training.
