Sedlecky surprised everyone, even himself, to take 928 points with the epée after winning 22 of his bouts in the fencing event and finishing first. The vastly experience 34-year-old told us, “I did not expect to come out first, I am very surprised. We are in a very tough Final, no one has an advantage. My style is very emotional, that maybe helped me”.
It was extremely fast in the pool with six athletes recording sub-2 minute times. Cooke was predictably the quickest but he was pushed all the way by Russian surprise package Roman Diachkov, who is competing for the very first time on the international circuit.
Home favourite Adam Marosi was sixth in a time of 1:59:43 and said afterwards, “My fence was not very good this morning but I recovered well with a strong swim in a difficult pool. My aim is now to get into the top six before the combined, then I should be in a comfortable position to challenge for the gold”.
Model of consistency Jung has been strong so far this week and will hoe that his ride and combined can keep him in contention for honours. The 23-year-old was second in the fence and third in the pool and now leads with 2300 points to his name.
Only 100 points separate the top 11 so there are still many athletes in contention.
