The team made up of Nikkos Papadopolo and Pedro Gonzalez, started off by winning the fencing event with 1000 points. They were followed by the Dominican Republic with Julio Benjamin and Axel Hernandez who scored 928 points and the Mexicans Oscar Soto and Jorge Inzunza were third with 832 points. In the swimming event the Mexicans won with a time of 1.57.55 followed closely by the Dominican Republic team at 1.57.98 and Guatemala swam well enough with a 2.02.62 to remain in the lead. This lead was even greater after they scored a perfect 1200 point ride to Mexico´s 1140. Going into the final event the Guatemalans had a comfortable 42 second lead although the Mexicans have proven to be very strong run shooters and the local spectators were a bit nervous. However Nikkos and Pedro were having the competition of their lives and only missed three shots between the two of them as they won the combined event with 2308 points thus extending their lead and finalizing their perfect day with a total of 5840 points.
The pressure to catch up proved to be too much for the Mexicans who really struggled with the shoot and ended up with a score of 2196 in the combined event and a pentathlon score of 5560 points. The Dominican Republic held on for third with a pentathlon score of 5248 points and Panama with Jose Guitian and Nicolas Garcia were fourth with a score of 4976 points.
The next Central American and Caribbean Games will be held in Veracruz, Mexico in 2014 and the challenge will be to have a full program with the men, women and mixed relays for that occasion.
