Kim stated after his win “I am very happy to get this gold medal.
“I am happy to be able to let people know about this sport (with his gold medal) because not many people in Korea know about this sport.”
Kim showed that solid performances in all disciplines can equal Modern Pentathlon Gold. Kim finished 7th in the fencing event behind eventual Silver medallist Ilya Shugarov (RUS) and Jan Szalay (CZE) who had a terrible combined event and ended up crashing down to 14th position.
Kim managed 3rd in the 200m swim behind the Youth World Champion Jiahao Han (CHN) who clocked an impressive time of 2.01.49. However this was the highlight of Han’s day as the event favourite finished down in 11th position.
In the combined event It was Kim’s superior speed, fitness and shooting ability which allowed him to glide past his opponents and claim Youth Olympic Glory.
The medals were handed out by IOC Member Sir Philip Craven and mascots by UIPM President Dr h.c. Klaus Schormann. IOC Director General Mr Urs Lacotte, IOC Member Mr Gilbert Felli and the IOC Head of the Youth Olympic Games Mr Essar Gabriel were also present to see the historic event which again showed the success and potential of the new UIPM Laser Shooting System which is certainly the future of the sport.
