International Modern Pentathlon will be heading to Sassari, which is located on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia for the first time in its history. The locals will be treated to an Olympic standard field with 18 out of the top 20 Men competing and 9 out of the top 10 Women vying for valuable World Cup Series points to qualify for the World Cup Final, where priceless Olympic Qualification spots are on offer.
The athletes will also get their second chance to compete with the new environmentally friendly laser shooting pistols. Laser shooting made a successful World Cup Series debut at World Cup #1, Rancho Mirage, USA and will be used in all UIPM International Competitions and the 2012 London Olympic Games.
UIPM President Dr h.c. Klaus Schormann: We are very happy to be coming back to Italy, who always organize fantastic events. Laser Shooting was a big success at World Cup #1 and we are looking forward to having our 2nd event with this new form of shooting which allows us to bring the sport to the youth.
The favourite for gold in Italy will be World #2 Adam Marosi (HUN) who showed solid form grabbing silver at the first World Cup of the year. World #1 Aleksander Lesun (RUS) will be looking to bounce back from an extremely disappointing World Cup #1 which saw him spectacularly miss out on making the final. The form athlete of the tour is Pavlo Tymoshchenko (UKR), who smashed the shooting world record on his way to gold at Rancho Mirage and will be keen to keep this momentum going.
Women's powerhouses World #1 Lena Schoneborn (GER) and 3 times World Champion Amelie Caze (FRA) are expected to continue their domination of the Women's event as they did in 2010. However, former World #1 Laura Asadauskaite (LTU) is back in action after taking a year off and will keen to get back to the top.
The Italian public will be out in force to support their local heroes and they have a real chance of seeing their stars on the podium. The top 10 World Ranked dynamos of Ricardo De Luca & Nicola Benedetti will be looking to impress in front of their home fans, as will Claudia Cesarini and Youth Olympic Games qualifier Gloria Tocchi.
World Cup #2 will also host the first Mixed Relay of the season, an event that the athletes and spectators love. The Mixed Relay made it's World Championships debut in 2010 and the gold medallists pair of Sylvia Czwojdzinska and Remigiusz Golis (POL) will be looking for more success in Sassari against a strong field.
Fans around the world will have the chance to watch these, and other great athletes and share in the excitement of Modern Pentathlon. The UIPM will broadcast the finals live on Pentathlon TV @ pentathlon.org on 16 and 17 April 2011. The broadcast will feature highlights of the fencing and swimming events as well as live coverage of the riding and combined event.
The Italian World Cup is the second in a series of 5 events in the coming four months which will culminate in the World Cup final to be held in London, Great Britain on 9-10 July.
