As was the case in the women’s qualification yesterday, some big names from the 106 athletes at the start of the day failed to squeeze into the final 36.

Lesun Among Qualifiers in Group A

World #1 Alexsander Lesun (RUS) was one of the athltes in the huge pack to cross together in group A to qualify for Sunday’s final. The Russian was joined by his team mate Ilia Frolov (RUS), Justinas Kinderis (LTU) and Thomas Daniel (AUT) who all managed to qualify with ease. Local favourite and Champion of Champions Pierpaolo Petroni was also among the top 12 to qualify in the thrill of the local crowd to make his 1st World Championships final. Bence Demeter (HUN) made it hard for himself, starting way back and event setting off for the last 1000m outside the top 12? But his strong running saved him from going home early. Karyakin Wins Fence to be Top in Group A

2010 World Champion Serguei Karyakin (RUS) has won the fencing to jump to the top of the leaders board ahead of the combined event. Karyakin will have a 1 second leader over the Brit Nick Woodbridge who finished 2nd in the swim and 3rd in the fence. Those 2 have opened up a gap over the rest of the field with 3rd place Pierpaolo Petroni (ITA) and World #1 Aleksender Lesun (RUS) being 32 & 33 seconds back respectively. Junior World Champion Jamie Cooke (GBR) is in a bit of trouble languishing back in 14 th place and will have to shoot well if he is to make the final.
