Women's Qualification Review: Schoneborn & Marques Shine in the Heat
Mar 15th Mar, 12
The 83 women pentathete’s competing at World Cup #2 were greeted with some scorching weather which made life hard for the women. Even harder for some who have been training the last 4 months in negative temperature. In saying that the world’s best all round thlete’s coped extremely well and all the top names qualified. What makes this even more impressive is that this is the 3rd time they have completed a pentathlon in 8 days and they had to get into the top 12 which is no easy feat. The most impressive performer today was not surprisingly Lena Schoneborn (GER). Just 4 days after her gold medal performance at World Cup #1, the World #1 eased through qualification like a true Olympic champion. Not far behind Schoneborn form wise was local hero Yane Marques (BRA). Marques is returning to her favourite venue where she won silver at the 2009 World Cup Final (won by Rimsaite, who is also competing here) and did not let down her fanatic fans with a polished, professional performance. The day seemed to be going well for the triple world champion Amelie Caze (FRA) who is competing for the first time in 8 months after she won her fencing group and came 3rd in the swim. However the Frenchwomen struggled to cope in the heat, which was not helped by her extended absence from the sport and had to work hard to finish 10th and secure her qualification. Leila Gyenesei (HUN), Freyja Prentice (GBR) and Yuliga Kolegova (RUS) are prime examples of what a week can mean in Modern Pentathlon. Last Thursday, they put in a weak performance and failed to qualify for the World Cup #1 final. Today their performances was completely different as they charged through their groups to secure easily qualification and redemption. Mhairi Spence (GBR), Laura Asadauskaite (LTU), Elodie Clouvel (FRA) and Victoria Tereshuk (UKR) all had solid hit outs today and will feel happy with their form as they eye a medal on Saturday. Athletes who did not fare extremely well today, who made the final at World Cup #1 were Melanie McCann (CAN), Polina Struchtkova (BUL), supermum Micky Kelly (USA) and the entire Italian team who really struggled under the hot Brazilian sun. Check out exclusive interviews here: Freyja Prentice (GBR) Natalya Coyle (IRE) Donata Rimsaite (RUS) English or Russian. Also you can see the full results here.

The Olympic champion was never phased as she strolled into qualification. She was joined in qualification by Adrienn Toth (HUN), Sylvia Gawlikowska (POL), Elena Rublevska (LAT) and Heather Fell (GBR) who all performed well in the heat. Youngsters Natalya Coyle (IRE) and Anastaysia Spas (UKR) also performed strongly to ease into the top 12 and will be looking for a high place on Saturday.
