Last weekend, the beautiful seaside resort of Pinamar on the Patagonian Atlantic coast of Argentina saw the 4th edition of the South American Championships for Youth categories E to B with over 70 athletes from hosts Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay.
Christopher Patte victorious at Champion of Champions

French 23-year-old Christopher Patte capped a sensational day for himself by grabbing his maiden title by winning Champion of Champions at the Al Shaqab Centre in Doha, Qatar. A quality swim was followed by a perfect ride and after starting the final event in pole, 8 seconds ahead of his nearest rival, he was simply unstoppable in the combined, never relinquishing his lead to claim a well-deserved victory.
Born with the Olympic gene

His father is an Olympian. His oldest sister is an Olympian. His second oldest sister is a ‘Youth Olympian’. Now 16-year-old Max Esposito can also claim a degree of Olympic status, having just book his place for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Nanjing, China, after having finished fourth at the recent Asia and Oceania YOG qualification event in Astana, Kazakhstan. As the first Oceania finisher, Esposito qualified a quota place for Australia and in doing so will be allocated the spot at the YOG in August next year.
Men’s 2013 World Championships preview

It has been an enthralling Modern Pentathlon season so far amongst the men, with some brilliant competition making for some unpredictable results in 2013. Now the action is sure to be cranked up another notch as the UIPM World Championships Men’s Qualification stages get underway on Thursday 22 August in Chinese Taipei’s second largest city. The Fengshan Stadium in Kaohsiung will host 85 of the very best pentathletes from around the globe with some scintillating action guaranteed as they seek to write their name in the history books by becoming World Champion this Saturday.
Prades and five others share first place in Group ‘B’ going into Final

Valentin Prades of France was first to cross the line at the end of the day’s combined event to put him, along with five others, including Russia’s Illia Frolov, top of his Group with 4376 points. Consistency and especially a sixth place in the fence had him in a comfortable position to end with a time of 12:34:11.

It's a tough competition for first Gold of the year World #1 and current World Champion Aleksender Lesun (RUS) will start favourite after a dominating performance in the qualifications in all disciplines, but he will be watching out for Olympic Champion David Svoboda (CZE) and Bronze Medallist Adam Marosi (HUN) though neither of whom were able to reach a World Cup podium place last year.

For the first time on the world level, the new format Combined Event took place now consisting of 4 laps of 800 meters running interspersed by 4 shooting series (still of 5 shots) and a new time out limit for shooting, dropping from 70 to 50 seconds. Olympic Champion David Svoboda (CZE) said "I am glad for the change; for the last 4 years had 3 shooting series; now shooting is more important. My team is very strong in shooting so we are happy to have this extra shooting round."
Lesun leads Group A and Kasza Group B for the Combined Event

Jospeh Evans (GBR) produced the fastest swim time from Group A in a time of 2:01.77 a second faster than Maksim Kustov (RUS) Winner of the fencing Aleksander Lesun (RUS) had a disappointing swim finishing 11th, however this was still enough to keep him at the top of the leaders board going into the combined event. The World #1 will start 2 seconds ahead of Alvaro Sandoval (MEX) who finished 2nd in the fence & 6th in the swim. Daniel Thomas (AUT) and Samuel Curry (GBR) will both start 12 seconds behind Lesun. In Group B, Hungarian Robert Kasza’s win in the Fencing with 17 bouts puts him 9 seconds ahead Omar El Geziry who came 3rd in the Fence with 16 bouts. Joint 1st in the Fence was Alexander Nobis (GER) whilst Jianli Guo of China will start the Combined 13 seconds behind Kasza thanks to his 5th place in the Fencing following the 4th fastest swim
