Women's YOG Final Review
Aug 21st Aug, 10
Leydi Laura Moya Lopez (CUB) has won the gold medal in the women's individual Modern Pentathlon at the first ever Youth Olympic Games, coming from nowhere to overhaul the pre-event favourite, Youth World Champion Szofia Foldhazi (HUN) who held on for the Silver. Anastasiya Spa (UKR) held off a fast finishing Anna Olesinski (USA) for the Bronze.
Oleseinski's (USA) Thoughts
Aug 21st Aug, 10
Born into an all-round sporting family from Roswell, New Mexico, American modern pentathlete Anna Olesinski has set high standards for herself even so early in her career. Olesinski finished fourth in the girls individual modern pentathlon on Saturday at Singapore Sports School, but the talented 16-year-old was still hard on herself. "I am really disappointed because I thought I'd get a medal. I've never been passed before but the Cuban (Leydi Laura Moya Lopez) passed me," said Olesinski. "I really wanted to get third. It kind of sucks coming fourth." Moya Lopez clinched the gold medal with 4100 points, followed by Zsofia Foldhazi (HUN) and Anastasiya Spas (UKR), in the four-discipline sport. After completing the fencing and swimming components Olesinski sat back in eighth place, but she displayed strength in the combined shooting and running event, clocking a time of 12:21.48 for a final tally of 3984 points. "I came from behind but I thought I could have done better," she said. Olesinski first got her first taste of modern pentathlon at a young age thanks to her father, coach and former Polish pentathlon team member Jan Olesinski. "Ever since I could walk, I've always been running and gradually took up the other events after that," she said. Her father also coaches modern pentathlete Nathan Schrimsher (USA), who will compete in the boys individual event on Sunday. "My dad does a good job of being a coach. He knows what he's going and does well at balancing it all out," she said. "He gives me normal advice that you'd get from a coach, but sometimes it's hard because I want to do well and he's just always so supportive." Sport is definitely in the family's blood and her mother Marie Olesinski is a former Polish national basketball player. Her brother Marek was also a member of the 2009 New Mexico state basketball championship team, and brother Alex has been a state swimming champion. "It's competitive between all of us, but it's fun to go out and train together as a family."
