YOG Champion's Pistol Donated to Olympic Museum

Wednesday, 02 February 2011 16:31

At the 1st Youth Olympic Games in Singapore last August, Leydi Laura Moya Lopez, an 18-year-old Cuban, was crowned champion of the women’s modern pentathlon. Recently, through the intermediary if the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM), the athlete and the German company which developed the laser system mounted on the laser pistol used during the Modern Pentathlon events, donated this item to The Olympic Museum.

The inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) brought great thrills and excitement to the shores of Singapore in August, 2010. As the first edition of the event, the Singapore YOG attracted tremendous interest from all over the world, with thousands of young athletes coming to our small country to compete and learn about different cultures and forge friendships off the playing field, while also competing to win gold in their respective events.

Distinguished Guests at YOG Modern Pentathlon Event

The Modern Pentathlon Event at the Youth Olympic Games was a major success and saw 2 new aspects of the sport implemented, laser shooting and the Mixed Relay. This was followed closely by the media and the pentathlon family. The IOC and distinguished guests also turned out in droves with the below people attending the Modern Pentathlon event at some stage, this shows how strong the sport currently is:

The Closing Ceremony of the inaugural edition of the Youth Olympic Games will bring a dramatic and emotional end to 12 days of world-class sporting competition and cultural and educational activities in Singapore on Thursday night.

Some 3,600 athletes aged 14 to 18 took part in the Singapore 2010 Games. They were accompanied by 1,850 officials, and some 20,000 volunteers helped make the organisational aspect of the Games a success.

Nothing was going to stop Egyptian modern pentathlete Jihan El Midany from competing at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games - not high fevers, fasting for Ramadan, or revealing sportswear.

El Midany, Egypt’s flagbearer in the opening ceremony, almost pulled out of the Games earlier this year when she became aware of the rules that athletes must wear swimsuits that expose the neck, shoulders and legs.

Fate threw them together. Together they made sports history.

They bridged 90 miles, 50 years and a raft of political complexities, two teenagers, both 18 years old, one American, the other Cuban.

In the mixed relay event that wrapped up the modern pentathlon competition at these first-ever Youth Olympic Games, Cuban Leydi Laura Moya Lopez and American Nathan Schrimsher competed together as a team. Two nations, one entry on the start sheet.

Luck of the Draw in YOG Mixed Relay

Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:36

There was a fine display of international co-operation at Singapore Sports School on Tuesday, when Ukraine’s Anastasiya Spas and Ilya Shugarov of Russia combined to edge out 23 other mixed-nation teams and win gold in the modern pentathlon mixed relay at the Youth Olympic Games.

Randomly drawn teams comprised of one boy and one girl took to the piste, the pool and the running track just as they had in their individual events. And despite a noticeable drop in nerves among athletes, they did not hold back their competitive streak.
