The men have a lot to live up to tomorrow at the final of World Cup #3 after the women put on an outstanding show today. The local Hungarian crowd will be out in force to cheer on World #2 Adam Marosi (HUN) who is the clear favourite to claim victory which will propel him back to the #1 position.

Aya Medany (EGY) has had a brilliant day to win World Cup #3 in Százhalombatta, Hungary. Medany outshot Lena Schoneborn (GER) and Mhairi Spence (GBR) in the final shoot to storm to gold with Schoneborn and Spence having to settle for silver and bronze respectively.

Caze Rides Well to Start 1st in Combined

Saturday, 07 May 2011 15:41

Amelie Caze (FRA) has dropped just 4 points in the ride to maintain her lead at the top of the leaders board. Caze will start 8 seconds ahead of Mhairi Spence (GBR) who also had a brilliant ride only dropping 20 points. The story of the ride was Aya Medany (EGY) who is not known for her riding ability but achieved a perfect score of 1200 to win the riding discipline and maintain her 3rd position starting just 9 seconds behind Caze.

Next back is Lena Schoneborn (GER) who again rode magnificently like the majority of the field to start 19 seconds behind the leader. Local favourites Adrienn Toth and Leila Gyenesei are still in medal contention starting 10th and 11th respectively.

This combined event has the potential to be one of the closest in history with the top 15 athletes only having a minute between them. Speedster Anastasiya Prokopenko (BLR) will like her chances for victory starting in 16th position just 1.06 behind the leader which is certainly attainable for her.

Clouvel Beats Kovacs in Swim

Saturday, 07 May 2011 12:29

Elodie Clouvel (FRA) has produced a dominant performance in the swimming event to move up to 5th position. Clouvel comfortably beat Sarolta Kovacs (HUN) by over 2 seconds and said: ‘I am very happy with this time (2:08.24), as it was very windy conditions, it is a result of my hard training’.

Fencing winner Amelie Caze (FRA) had a poor swim by her standards finishing 12th, however she still leads the competition ahead of Mhairi Spence (GBR) and Aya Medany (EGY). Lena Schoneborn (GER) who was joint winner in the fencing also had a disappointing swim which saw her finish down in 23rd position and now lies in 4th position.

The surprise of the day is young Australian Chloe Esposito who is having the competition of her life and sits in 8th position heading into the ride.

Olympic Champion Lena Schoneborn (GER) has burst back to her top fencing form and has won fencing discipline alongside Amelie Caze (FRA). They both scored 25 victories and 10 defeats, 1 ahead of Mhairi Spence (GBR). Spence was very happy after the fencing displine and said ‘it was great to finally show my top fencing form during the competition. I fence like this every day in training!’

World Cup #2 silver medallist Anastasiya Prokopenko (BLR), who had a devastating combined event is very well posited in 8th position, together with crowd favourite Adrienn Toth (HUN). Donata Rimsaite (RUS) has seemed to have recovered from her virus which affected her so much in the qualification by finishing a respectable 15th position, 7 victories behind Caze and Schoneborn.

Triple World Champion Amelie Caze (FRA) will be looking to make it 2 World Cup victories after 2 starts tomorrow as she starts as clear favourite in the Women’s final at World Cup #3 in Hungary. Caze, who also won World Cup #1 this year, before sitting out World Cup #2 looked in great form during qualification on Thursday. At the lead of the chasing pack will be Olympic Champion Lena Schoneborn (GER), who also looked confortable in qualifying, but has not won an event since the World Cup Final in June last year so the pressure will be starting to mount. For Schoneborn to be victorious she needs to be at the top of her fencing game with the most victories she can munster.

There were big shocks today in the men’s qualification event today with World Champion Serguei Karyakin (RUS), Double Olympic Champion Andrei Moiseev, World #4 Ilia Frolov (RUS) and World #5 Justinas Kinderis (LTU) all failing to qualify for Sunday’s Final. Frolov and Moiseev had a disaster in the Combined Event falling from 5th position to well out of the top 12. Karyakin and Kinderis were not able to overcome a poor fencing display in the combined event and crashed out of the event.
