Schoneborn Strolls to Qualification in Group A

Lena Schoneborn (GER) has continued her strong form which saw her win gold at World Cup #1 today in women’s group A qualification. The Olympic champion was never phased as she strolled into qualification.

She was joined in qualification by Adrienn Toth (HUN), Sylvia Gawlikowska (POL), Elena Rublevska (LAT) and Heather Fell (GBR) who all performed well in the heat.

Youngsters Natalya Coyle (IRE) and Anastaysia Spas (UKR) also performed strongly to ease into the top 12 and will be looking for a high place on Saturday.

All Big Names Through in Group B

Amelie Caze (FRA) has felt the heat and her lack of competitions over the past 12 months to drop down to 10th and just qualify for Saturday’s final.

Sylvia Gawlikowska (POL) and World #1 Lena Schoneborn (GER) have come equal top in the fencing, however Gawlikowska’s superior swim means that she will start first in the combined event.

The Olympic champion will start in 2nd 4 seconds behind Gawlikowska with Youth Olympic Games bronze medallist Anastasiya Spas a further 9 seconds behind.

The top 3 will be chased by the Chinese pair of Yihua Miao and Qian Chen who will start not far behind Spas.

Amelie Caze (FRA) has shown that she has no fitness concerns after finishing 3rd in the swim in group B which means she will start first in the combined event. Her country women Elodie Clouvel (FRA) won the swim in a time of 2:08.13 which moves her into 4th in the combined event.

Leila Gyenesei (HUN) was just behind the Clouvel which moves her into 2nd ahead of the combined event 1 second behind the triple world champion with combined event specialist Laura Asadauskaite (LTU) being in 4th 30 seconds behind Caze.

Opdycke Win's Group C Swim

American Rendy Opdycke (USA) has produced a solid time in the swim to win group C. Opdycke swam 2:13.28 which was half a second quicker than the local hero Yane Marques (BRA) and Chloe Esposito (AUS) who was 5th at World Cup #1 was in 3rd.

World Cup #1 silver medallist Mhairi Spence (GBR) is well positioned in 4th position 3 seconds behind the American with World Champion Victoria Tereshuk (UKR) back in 8th.

Caze Straight back to Top in Group B

Amelie Caze (FRA) has wasted no time returning to her rightful position at the summit of the leaders board after winning fencing in group B. The triple world champion scored 17 victories and only 7 defeats to come equal top with Ekaterina Khuraskina (RUS).

There is a dangerous group of athletes only 1 victory behind including the 2 looking for redemption after missing out of the World Cup #1 final Leila Gyenesei (HUN) and Freyja Prentice (GBR). Also tied with these 2 is Aya Medany (EGY) and World #2 Laura Asadauskaite (LTU).

Jeong Quickest in Group A Swim

Mina Jeong (KOR) led the way in group A swimming recording a time of 2:13.80. The Korean easily Joanna Gomolinska (POL) by 3 seconds with Olympic silver medallist Heather Fell (GBR) being a further seconds back.

World Cup #1 Champion Lena Schoneborn (GER) posted a solid time of 2:20.61 to be in 11th position heading into the fencing
