Belarus Reigns Supreme!!
3 June 2008 - There is no better way to finish a major competition like a World Championships than with a whole lot of suspense. That is exactly what happened here in Budapest this afternoon. In a fantastic display, Belarus started the run 17 seconds ahead of Hungary who were in turn 7 seconds in front of Lithuania. After the first 1500 metres Belarus' lead was reduced to 13 seconds, and Lithuania had pulled within a stride or two of Hungary at the transition.
Peter Tiboyla (HUN) blasted out of the stadium to regain some of the lead Hungary had surrendered, but with 600 metres left Krungolcas (LTU) took over 2nd place for Lithuania and by the end of that second 1500 metre leg had 10 seconds on Hungary.
Out front Prokopenko (BLR) was running scared, knowing the Lithuanian running monster Zadneprovskis was racing up from behind. Hungary fell further back and with 750 metres left in the race it was clear Hungary would be the bronze medalist. It wasn't until the final 150 metres that we could determine the gold medal but the results speak for themselves.
So ends the 2008 World Championships in Budapest. This was replete with action, suspense, drama, and stories worthy of Hungarian sporting folklore.
All of today's action was covered in our competition blog (find it here) and the full set of detailed results are available here.

Spanish Treasure Found in Madrid
April 10-13 were the dates, and Madrid, Spain was the site of stop #4 in the UIPM World Cup series of Modern Pentathlon. Of course the podium spots were the primary focus for most, but this is an Olympic year, and many athletes were intensely focused on gaining more valuable Pentathlon world ranking points. These points are as good as gold for some athletes. With very few qualifying competitions left, including just one more World Cup, and the UIPM World Championships in Budapest every point now could be the difference between competing in Beijing or watching it on television.
The competition in Madrid may be over, but there is no reason you have to miss it. Our friends at Horizon Solutions both broadcast live, and recorded all four days of competition. In addition there are 4 days of blogs (with pictures) that you can access HERE, and the complete, detailed results from Madrid are available in the competition results area HERE.
There is one more stop in the World Cup series; Kladno, Czech Republic. This will be the last opportunity before the World Championships, and for many athletes the last opportunity this year, to qualify for a spot in Beijing this summer. Its all-or-nothing in this last World Cup competition for 2008; you don’t want to miss this.
Press releases for World Cup events are available HERE.
