2010 World Cup Final - Moscow

Adam Marosi has successfully defended his World Cup Final crown by producing an incredible combined event in Moscow, Russia. Marosi held off strong challenges from the home superstar Ilia Frolov and the always consistent David Svoboda (CZE) who won the Silver and Bronze Medals respectively. This was a welcome return to form for the World #1 who has struggled over the past few months to emulate his 2009 results. ‘I am so happy with this result. 7 athletes managed a perfect score of 1200 in the riding event, including the top 4 athletes to start in the Combined Event. Ilia Frolov (RUS) will start 1st 9 seconds ahead of young team mate Aleksander Lesun (RUS) and 21 seconds ahead of World #1 and defending Champion Adam Marosi (HUN). Double Olympic Champion and local hero Andrei Moiseev had a disappointing ride to drop down to 5th, 25 seconds behind Frolov. The dangerous David Svoboda (CZE) and Combined Event specialist Nicola Benedetti (ITA) will be a further 10 seconds behind and will sure be pushing for a podium position.

Remigiusz Golis (POL) has made up for his poor fencing by easily winning the swimming event by over 4 seconds. Egyptian El Geziry again showed his speed in the pool by finishing 2nd ahead of Nick Woodbridge (GBR) and World Champion Adam Marosi (HUN) who gained valuable points after finishing down in the fencing to jump up to 5th. Frolov’s 10th position in the swim was enough to keep him at the top of the leaders board with Aleksander Lesun (RUS) and Andrei Moiseev (RUS) rounding out an all Russian top 3 going into the ride. Nicola Benedetti (ITA)has had his best fence of the season to finish equal first with Russian Ilia Frolov (RUS) and Stanislau Zhurauliou who all had 24 victories and 11 defeats. This was one ahead of Dmytro Kirpulyanskyy and only 3 ahead of Double Olympic Champion and local favourite Andrei Moiseev (RUS). Defending Champion and World #1 Adam Marosi (HUN) is a further 2 victories off the pace and has alot of work to do to retain his title. The most consistent athlete of the year Andrejus Zadneprovskis (LTU) who usually is at the top of the fencing leaders board finished a disappointing 28th position which ruins his chances of a dream gold.

The top 36 men have qualified in the strongest field of the year to compete in the World Cup Final. The 5 World Cup’s resulted in 5 different winners which will all be competing here in Moscow. Last year’s World Cup Final Champion Adam Marosi (HUN) has had a disappointing by his lofty standards in 2010 and will be looking to add to his only gold at World Cup #3. He will find this tough with the young Russian sensation and World Cup #4 Champion Aleksander Lesun, his team mate Ilia Frolov who won World Cup #5 and the ever consistent David Svoboda (CZE) looking to take his crown and call themselves the World’s best.. Moscow, Russia: 19 June 2010 – Lena Schoneborn (GER) has capped off a remarkable World Cup Series by claiming Gold at the World Cup Final in Moscow, Russia to add to her other 3 Gold’s in 2010. Schoneborn comfortably beat Donata Rimsaite (LTU) and Elena Rublevska (LAT) who won Silver and Bronze respectively. Lena said ‘I am ecstatic about my form, I can’t seem to do anything wrong. I hope I can keep this form going into the World Championships’.

Lena Schoneborn (GER) has produced 1160 ride to jump over Elena Rublevska (LAT) to have a 4 second lead in the Combined Event. The big mover was World #1 Donata Rimsaite who scored a near perfect 1180 to start 5th only 25 seconds behind Schoneborn. The big shock was Egyptian Superstar Aya Medany who only managed 996 points to plummet down to 14th position 1 minute behind Schoneborn, surely ruining her chances for gold. Leila Gyenesei (HUN) has smashed her personal best time by nearly 2 seconds to beat the rest of the field by 4 seconds in an impressive time of 2:05.79 in the swimming event. Next best was local favourite Polina Struchtkova (RUS) and Samantha Murray (GBR) who emerged from the pool with a ripped swimming suit! Elena Rublevska’s 26th position was enough to keep her at the top of the leaders board, however Olympic Champion Lena Schoneborn (GER) is breathing down her neck being only 4 points behind. Gyenesei’s blistering swim has rocketed her up to 3rd position.  World Champion Qian Chen (CHN) and World #1 Donata Rimsaite (LTU) are comfortably placed in 6th and 7th position respectively.

Elena Rublevska (LAT) has dominated the strong World Cup Final field to easily win the fencing event. Rublevska recorded an amazing 28 victories and only 5 defeats. This was 4 ahead of Olympic Champion Lena Schoneborn (GER) with current World Champion Qian Chen (CHN) a further victory behind. World #1 Donata Rimsaite (LTU) and Egyptian superstar Aya Medany (EGY) are in 4th place to keep themselves in contention for the Gold Medal.

We have been across the globe, from the luxurious beaches of Playa del Carmen to the Medway in the United Kingdom. The athletes have battled hard to gain enough points to qualify for the prestigious competition to be held at the Russian National Team’s Training Centre. Today will be the Women’s World Cup Final where Donata Rimsaite (LTU) will be looking to make it a historic 3 World Cup Final victories in a row.
