The day started in Fencing Hall where Lucie Grolichova (CZE) lead from start to finish to claim the fencing honours with 27 victories and 8 defeats at her first World Cup of the year. She was pushed all the way by Double World Champion, Caze who was one victory behind. Current World Champion Qian Chen (CHN) who has just returned from injury put in a solid performance to finish in 3rd place, equal with Schoneborn. World #1 Donata Rimsaite has a disappointing fence finishing in 11th position, a massive 11 victories behind Grolichova.
In the pool under the hot sun, Elodie Clouvel (FRA) proved herself to be Pentathlon’s leading swimmer by winning the disciple. Clouvel just out touched Sarlota Kovacs (HUN) who recorded a personal best after a lengthy lay off due to injury. Caze’s 3rd position was enough catapult her to the top of the leaders board ahead of fencing winner Grolichova who finished down in 20th position. Schoneborn finished 8th which brought her up to 3rd position overall before the ride.
The Women handled the tough riding course much better than the Men. Caze had a solid ride and will start 1st in the Combined Event. Schoneborn thrilled the crowd by having a near perfect ride to chop down Caze’s lead and move into second, 14 seconds behind her. She will be followed by current World Champion Qian Chen (CHN) who had a perfect ride to move with 4 seconds of Schoneborn. 2008 and 2009 World Cup winner Rimsaite is in 9th position, 40 seconds back.
In the Combined Event, Caze left the 1st shoot as she arrived with a big lead, followed by Yane Marques (BRA) who improved her position from 4th with Schoneborn back in 6th position. Caze started the 2nd shoot again in 1st position with Schoneborn and Rimsaite having amazing runs to arrive in equal 2nd. Caze held her nerve to again leave 1st ahead of Marques who showed strong shooting form and Rimsaite and Schoneborn 5 seconds back. Schoneborn had a fantastic 2nd run to come into the 3rd shoot equal with Caze and ahead of Rimsaite and Marques. Caze and Schoneborn both had great shoots to leave together as they arrived ahead of Marques. Schoneborn’s superior running power and fitness ensured her Gold medal in front of her home crowd, Caze held on for Silver and Czwojdzinska came from 5th position at the start of the final run to claim Bronze.
