Kovacs Stuns Field to Win Fence

Saturday, 28 May 2011 05:20

Junior World Champion Sarolta Kovacs (HUN) has stunned the field by produced her best ever fencing performance to win the fencing at the Women’s Final at World Cup #4. Kovacs scored 27 victories and 8 defeats, 2 ahead of Russian Ekaterina Khuraskina.

After the fencing Kovacs said: “I am so pleased with this result. At World Cup #3, I only got half the amounts of victories so I was very disappointed. I have worked very hard on my fencing over the past 3 weeks since and it has paid off.”

With Kovacs's best event, swimming still coming up, she stands to have a big lead heading into the ride.

Kovacs team mate Adrienn Toth (HUN) and 2009 World Champion Qian Chen were in 3rd, 5 victories behind.

World #5 Leila Gyenesei (HUN) had a disappointing fence finishing back in 19th position 10 victories off the pace. Fencing specialist Yane Marques (BRA) also had an off day finishing back in 20th position.

With a lot of the top ranked women missing, tomorrow’s final will be an opportunity for a new face to become a World Cup Champion. Lena Schoneborn, Amelie Caze, Donata Rimsaite and Aya Medany have won 8 out of the last 9 World Cup’s between them, so with them absent there is a chance for someone else to take the spotlight.

Many top athletes failed to cope with the Chengdu heat today at World Cup #4 in Men’s Qualification. World #4 Ilia Frolov (RUS) was the biggest casualty as he missed out on qualification for the 2nd time in a row. Frolov struggled in the fence and shoot and finished an agonizing one place outside the qualification spots.

2009 World Champion Ilia Frolov (RUS) is not having the best day and is back in 11th place heading into the combined event only 1 place in the qualification spots.
