Women's Final Day Review

Sunday, 10 July 2011 19:29

Germany’s Lena SCHONEBORN showed champion class to overhaul a 28-second deficit and retain the World Cup Final title she picked up in Moscow, Russia, in 2010.

Despite knocking down 3 fences the winner of the swimming Elodie Clouvel (FRA) will start 1st in the combined event 1 second ahead of the winner of the fencing Elena Rublevska (LAT). They will be followed by a pair of local Brits Mhairi Spence and Heather Fell who are 10 and 19 seconds behind the leader respectively.

World #2 Donata Rimsaite will start off 5th ahead of Lena Schoneborn (GER) in 7th who had a nightmare ride and is 29 seconds back.

The leaders will be looking over their back at the combined event speedster and former World #1 Laura Asadauskaite (LTU) who starts in 11th position and only 35 seconds behind Clouvel.

Clouvel Breaks PB to Win Swim

Sunday, 10 July 2011 13:06

Elodie Clouvel (FRA) has won the swim in a personal best time of 2:07.42 in the Women’s World Cup Final. Clouvel’s swim catapults her to the top of the leaders board ahead of the riding. Leila Gyenesei (HUN) came in 2nd 2 second behind the French Women which moves her up to 10th after a disappointing fence.

Local favourite Mhairi Spence’s (GBR) 8th position in the swim was enough to move her up to 2nd position just in front of the Olympic Champion MLena Schoneborn (GER) and the winner of the fencing Elena Rublevska (LAT).

Next up is the riding discipline which can be watched in its entirety live on Pentathlon.org.

Rublevska Dominates Fencing

Sunday, 10 July 2011 11:12

Mother of one and 2004 Olympic silver medallist Elena Rublevska (LAT) has rolled back the clock to win the fencing at the Women’s World Cup Final with 28 victories and only 4 defeats. She easily beat current World #1 Lena Schoneborn by 3 victories who finished 2nd.

World #3 Donata Rimsaite (RUS), despite not training for 6 weeks due to illness has put in a great performance sitting equal with Schoneborn. After a strong fence these 2 will be confident of victory and claiming direct qualification to next year’s Olympics.

Local favourite and one of the form athletes of the tour Mhairi Spence (GBR) is 2 victories back ahead of speedster Laura Asadauskaite (LTU) who will be very happy with her fencing performance.

Stay tuned for all the swimming action now!

Medany Pulls out During Fencing at WCF

Sunday, 10 July 2011 11:05

Disappointment for Aya Medany of Egypt as a recurring leg muscle injury forces her to pull midway through the fencing at the 2011 World Cup Final.

Medany struggled with the injury at World Cup #2 in April and then again at World Cup #3 in Budapest, despite which she still managed to win the event.

The injury will now put her in doubt for African Championships in a few week’s time.

Her coach Walid Sayad said: Aya is very dissapointed, however we though it was best for her long term future to pull out of today's event.

Women's World Cup Final has Begun

After World ranked #30 Nick Woodbridge rose to the top to grab bronze yesterday all the women competing today will like their chances for themselves to cause an upset. After battling their way across the world to gain valuable world cup series points to qualify for today’s final, the women will be looking to make the most of their chances.

We have all the World Cup Final champions in the field today being: Aya Medany (2007), Donata Rimsaite (2008 & 2009) and Lena Schoneborn (2010), so they know what it takes to be the best in these high pressure competitions.
