Karyakin Wins Fence to be Top in Group A

Friday, 16 March 2012 17:39

2010 World Champion Serguei Karyakin (RUS) has won the fencing to jump to the top of the leaders board ahead of the combined event. Karyakin will have a 1 second leader over the Brit Nick Woodbridge who finished 2nd in the swim and 3rd in the fence.

Those 2 have opened up a gap over the rest of the field with 3rd place Pierpaolo Petroni (ITA) and World #1 Aleksender Lesun (RUS) being 32 & 33 seconds back respectively.

Junior World Champion Jamie Cooke (GBR) is in a bit of trouble languishing back in 14 th place and will have to shoot well if he is to make the final.

Andrei Moiseev has followed up his impressive fence with a solid swim to start first in the combined event. The Olympic champion will start 24 seconds ahead of Bence Demeter (HUN) and 25 seconds ahead of Jin-Woo Hong (KOR).

Remigiusz Golis (POL) produced the fastest time of the day in the swim to move up to 6th overall only 35 seconds behind Moiseev.

Former World #1 David Svoboda (CZE) is a bit of trouble sitting back in 13th position, however his strong run and shoot should ensure he gets into the top 12.

Friday, 16 March 2012 14:32

Jamie Cooke (GBR) has again won the swimming in group A qualification. Cooke’s time was  1:57.38 which was significantly slower than his world record time at World Cup #1, but it was still over a second quicker than his teammate Nick Woodbridge.

Woodbridge said: “I am still feeling the effects of World Cup #1 and the early morning swim did not affect my time. I hope to be quicker for the final.”

2010 World Champion Serguei Karyakin (RUS) finished in 3rd 5 seconds being Cooke with  Jean maxence Berrou (FRA) just behind him.

The heat took its toll on the women today, so it will be interesting if the men cope better with it tomorrow for their qualification.

The 83 women pentathete’s competing at World Cup #2 were greeted with some scorching weather which made life hard for the women. Even harder for some who have been training the last 4 months in negative temperature.

In saying that the world’s best all round thlete’s coped extremely well and all the top names qualified. What makes this even more impressive is that this is the 3rd time they have completed a pentathlon in 8 days and  they had to get into the top 12 which is no easy feat.

The most impressive performer today was not surprisingly Lena Schoneborn (GER). Just 4 days after her gold medal performance at World Cup #1, the World #1 eased through qualification like a true Olympic champion. Not far behind Schoneborn form wise was local hero Yane Marques (BRA). Marques is returning to her favourite venue where she won silver at the 2009 World Cup Final (won by Rimsaite, who is also competing here) and did not let down her fanatic fans with a polished, professional performance.

The day seemed to be going well for the triple world champion Amelie Caze (FRA) who is competing for the first time in 8 months after she won her fencing group and came 3rd in the swim. However the Frenchwomen struggled to cope in the heat, which was not helped by her extended absence from the sport and had to work hard to finish 10th and secure her qualification.

Leila Gyenesei (HUN), Freyja Prentice (GBR) and Yuliga Kolegova (RUS) are prime examples of what a week can mean in Modern Pentathlon. Last Thursday, they put in a weak performance and failed to qualify for the World Cup #1 final. Today their performances was completely different as they charged through their groups to secure easily qualification and redemption.

Mhairi Spence (GBR), Laura Asadauskaite (LTU), Elodie Clouvel (FRA) and Victoria Tereshuk (UKR) all had solid hit outs today and will feel happy with their form as they eye a medal on Saturday.

Athletes who did not fare extremely well today, who made the final at World Cup #1 were Melanie McCann (CAN), Polina Struchtkova (BUL), supermum Micky Kelly (USA) and the entire Italian team who really struggled under the hot Brazilian sun.

Freyja Prentice (GBR) Natalya Coyle (IRE) Donata Rimsaite (RUS) English or Russian.
