"I knew we could be quite strong so to come here and win our first junior world championships gold medal and really wonderful. My team shot and run really well, so I got to run quite easy the last lap. I think of Pentathlon as 5 different puzzle pieces so all had to come together well and it did today" stated Margaux Isaksen.
The USA trio started 45 seconds back from Ukraine in the combined event, however an inspired performance by Margaux Isaksen who finished 4th at London 2012 ensured they ended up winning by a massive 24 ahead of the home town favourite, Poland represented by Anna Maliszewska, Paula Markowska and Natalia Kozuchowska and the 3 Team GB girls: Rebecca Wain, Kerry Prise and Kate Fowlie who powered home for bronze.
Team Poland stated after winning their silver: "We are very happy to win silver and very surprised because we had a bad fencing day, swimming was a good result as was horse riding. Before the combined we were in 7th position but we were very good in the running and shooting so to get the silver is wonderful."
USA started the day slowly in the fencing, which they would consider their weakest discipline. However, they would have been happy with 4th place in a tough field, a position they then matched in the pool.
Only 3 rails down in the ride meant they started 3rd in the combined event 45 seconds behind Ukraine and Russia, an event the 3 of them would consider them to excel in.
After strong 3 disciplines from the Ukrainians & Russians, most people thought they had enough of a lead over the Americans to take the gold and the silver. However, their lack of endurance and shooting accuracy cost them as they dropped out of the medals.
At the end the combined event was crucial as a first place in the combined event ensured the Americans gold, a second place got the Polish silver and fourth place was enough for the Brits to move into that all important bronze medal position.
